Since its initial dispute in court over Android patents, the legal battle between Apple Inc. (AAPL) and HTC has remained relatively quiet. The case, filed by the International Trade Commission (ITC), has seen little activity until now, when the agency recently posted a new complaint from Apple against HTC. This time, Apple is seeking to block the import of "personal electronic devices" made by HTC.
This isn’t the first time phone makers have used the ITC to challenge competitors. Just recently, Samsung filed for an import ban on Apple-handset imports as part of its ongoing patent dispute with other manufacturers. During the high-stakes patent wars between phone companies, multiple complaints have been filed, including one against HTC in July 2023. However, it wasn’t until today that Apple’s complaint against HTC made its way onto the ITC website.
The judge will deliver her ruling on whether HTC’s Android devices infringe on Apple’s patents sometime this August, with the ITC set to review the findings and make a final decision thereafter. Meanwhile, HTC has not idled its efforts in countering Apple’s claims. The Taiwanese manufacturer filed a similar import ban complaint against Apple earlier this year, and the results of that case are expected to be presented later in September.
